Here's a short rant on LinkedIn in list form:

1 - The articles, my God. For a "professional network" most of the articles seem to be aimed at those who barely passed high school. No detail, no sources (even uncited statistics are few and far between), and lots of PREDICTIONS.

2 - The comments. After a short period of time you start to question whether you're reading a LinkedIn discussion or something out of Yahoo! Answers.

3 - People changing their profile pictures to match their old school photos.

4 - The fact that I don't know why I'm on it but I'm still on it.

^Only on Linkedin because IT recruiters recommend it for showing you off to perspective employers, who expect you, a systems/network administrator, to magically become a network/voice architect or engineer for the price of a tier 2 helpdesk tech.

While it started out great, the addition of link sharing has just turned it into Facebook for people with degrees. The amount of "10 Steps to a Better Work Environment" and "How to Move Up in 2015" articles is mind numbing.

There are a lot of stupid articles on LinkedIn, but it's a fantastic source for job postings if you're looking for employment.

A note to employers: if you're checking employees' LinkedIn profiles and someone seems to have recently polished their's up, you might be losing someone pretty soon.

I'm on it, only because every job I've ever interviewed for was preceded by the hiring manager checking my profile, so I figure I better have one.

That said, I think they've left the "professional network" concept far, far behind in pursuit of more users, it's basically become a more structured version of Facebook at this point. As soon as a better alternative comes out that does what LinkedIn was originally created to do, I'm there.

LinkedIn is a great resource for learning which of your colleagues are the sort of people who post on Yahoo! Answers.
